What is to be said about mid week shows? They are hard to pull off that's for sure. One must make arrangements to get out of work at a reasonable hour and then quickly get down to the venue fighting that ever present rush hour traffic. Is it worth it, especially knowing you have work the next day? And what about the bands, do they get the reception that a normal weekend crowd would provide? Many of these questions were answered as Phish kicked off a two night mid week run at Alpharetta, Georgia's Encore Park on Tuesday 6/14/2011.

As far as reception goes, the talented foursome from Vermont drew quite a crowd. The mix of youngsters and long time fans gave a warm welcome with cheers, poster boards of their favorite songs, and what many would call a weekend attitude. The band reciprocated with a jovial opener called, "Dinner and a Movie". The first set was solid, most notably the grouping of "The Moma Dance > Possum, Cities > Fluffhead" got things into full swing. The show as whole had multiple highlights including deep jams in "Sand", "Down with Disease", and "Bug". Fortunately the show was not just a jam fest and had some very upbeat rocking moments. Covers of "Cities" (Talking Heads), "Ginseng Sullivan" (Norman Blake), "Light Up or Leave Me Alone" (Traffic), "A Day in the Life" (The Beatles) and "Quinn the Eskimo" (Bob Dylan) were definite crowd pleasers.

So what about our weekday shows? On this day, Phish certainly made the venture worthwhile delighting the crowd with a tight performance. For many, Wednesday morning was not fun and there may not have been enough coffee in Atlanta to remedy the situation. Despite that, dedicated fans would return for an encore performance that night, eager to see if round two would live up to its potential after what most considered to be a solid opening night.
