 HTN #85

My good friend and HTN Editor John Lynskey was kind enough to loan me this space to put down some of my musings about the current issue. Over the twenty-three years that we have been publishing Hittin' the Note magazine, I have seen and heard some of the best musicians in the world. The Allman Brothers Band, which is the very reason this magazine is in existence, has deeply moved my soul over this time, but it is our journey with Derek Trucks that has been the most rewarding for me. Seeing and filming Derek's first Atlanta appearance at the Cavern in 1991 with fellow HTN founders Bill Ector and Ron Currens; watching the evolution of his talents over countless performances in his teens and twenties; and now, the fact that Derek is headlining major amphitheaters is something worth celebrating! And celebrating is what we are doing with this issue.

Derek first appeared in our magazine in issue #9 and then again in #13. After that, he was pretty much a regular - show reviews, CD releases, guest spots with other artists, interviews, etc., all found their way into our publication. Early on we knew that his talents were special and that the future was going to be much more interesting with him in the mix. All of our staff felt strongly that his development needed to be documented, and Hittin' the Note was the perfect way to share it with the world.

In 1999 Derek met Susan Tedeschi and brought her into the nucleus of bands that were so essential to the appetite of our readers – the Allman Brothers Band, Gov’t Mule and the Derek Tucks Band - now, we had Susan to write about! What a pleasure it was to have some estrogen along with all that abundant testosterone on stage. At first, there was the Derek Trucks Band and the Susan Tedeschi Band, which evolved into the Soul Stew Revival for special occasions. This combustible combination and the needs of a growing family led to the formation of the Tedeschi Trucks Band.

HTN #85 contains a current interview with Derek and Susan that will catch you up on what’s happening now. The rest of the issue takes and a look back at their careers through eleven articles that we have published in the past. It’s been quite a rewarding journey, enjoy every word!  Tedeschi Trucks Band, Alpharetta, GA

It was a thrilling, soulful night with the TTB at the Verizon Amphitheatre on Friday, July 17, 2015. Check out a cut with Tommy Talton guesting on Let's Go Get Stoned. Doyle Bramhall II and Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings smoked with their own sets and in the epic encore set of The Letter - Sing a Simple Song/ I Want to Take You Higher. Seeing Derek play Duane's Goldtop Les Paul on the encore was a special treat - thanks to The Big House for helping that to happen!

Gregg Allman Live: Back to Macon

A great treat is in store for fans of Gregg Allman! Rounder Records will be releasing a live recording of an exceptional concert that took place in Macon, GA at the Grand Opera House on January 14, 2014.

Not only will the performance be available on CD and vinyl but also on DVD and in a CD/DVD package! In addition to the timeless classics recorded, one of the more creative aspects of the DVD is that it includes several very special interviews and a glimpse into the band visiting the much beloved Mama Louise at her famous H&H Restaurant in Macon, Ga.

HTN Feature Story: Planet of the Abts: All Things the Valley

All Things the Valley is the second album from Planet of the Abts and a strong follow up to their eponymous debut four years ago. P.O.A. is made up of drummer Matt Abts, bassist Jorgen Carlsson and guitarist/vocalist T-Bone Andersson, a trio with great depth and dimension. Abts and Carlsson have been the rhythm section of Gov't Mule since 2008, while Jorgen and T-Bone have been friends since meeting in their native Sweden in 1989. The nine songs on All Things the Valley represent the tremendous eclectic musical influences of Planet of the Abts, and make for an enjoyable listening experience. HTN recently caught up with Matt, Jorgen and T-Bone, and they explained in detail the making of this remarkable album. Please click here to read the entire article. Please click here to order the CD.
 American University 12/30/70 on Vinyl

Hittin' the Note was able to obtain a few copies of this 180 gram vinyl release - only 1,200 were made. You will love the warmth of analog on this 1970s recording! The Allmans were at a crucial stage in their development on that December night, having just returned from shows at the Fillmore East in New York on a tour promoting their second album, Idlewild South. "Don't Keep Me Wonderin" and "Leave My Blues at Home" had just appeared on Idlewild South and this performance marks the first live version of them to be released by the Allmans. The playing is fierce, especially the interaction of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts, with a solid 20 plus minute version of "Whipping Post."

As a special bonus to the first 100 buyers, we will enter you into a drawing to receive one of three very rare vinyl albums from the Allman Brothers Band – Seven Turns, Shades of two Worlds and An Evening With, First Set. Click here to find out more.

 Eat A Peach Art Posters

The colors on these new posters are vibrant and intense and turned out even better than we expected! A computer screen simply does not do them justice.  The Allman Brothers Band - Beacon Theatre, October 2014

The six shows at this venerable old theatre were a bittersweet goodbye to fans of this 45 year old, Rock ‘N Roll Hall of Fame band. Coming from all over the world to hear the magic brought out one last time by these 7 stellar musicians, no one left disappointed. Each performance created a very special feeling between the band and its audience, even more so than normal, as we all knew the end was near.

It was very evident that the fans were giving all of their love back to this band after every song. For the whole run the theatre was in unison as fans loudly sang along to their favorite songs. You could see the band visibly reaching deep inside themselves to give it everything they had, every song, every night. They came out with a focus and determination to leave it all on the stage and they succeeded magnificently, as they always have.

The Brothers played Will the Circle Be Unbroken throughout the run. A sentiment that seemed to say that their legacy will live on through the music they created and from all of the musicians and fans they have inspired through the years. Check out each night's set list, show description and purchase by clicking here. The road does indeed go on forever...

Allman Brothers Band - Aluminum ‘Shrooms

During the Brother's 45th anniversary year they had some very cool mushrooms hanging over the stage. We had so many inquiries about them that we contacted the manufacturer and had some made for the fans. They aren't inexpensive but they look very cool. Check ‘em out by clicking here.
