The last Friday night Allman Brothers show was one for the ages. Everything the band tried, succeeded; and magic imbued the proceedings. “Hot ‘Lanta” was electric; “No One Left to Run With" was a little slice of Allmans dance pop. “Leave My Blues at Home” and “Worried Down” explored the depths of hell, then “Soulshine” took us off to heaven. “True Gravity” was big and sleek, with a divine twin-guitar attack. Of course, any show with “Dream” in the first set is going to be a special show; this version featured Derek chiming, soaring, filling your head with sweet sheets of tone. And “Black Hearted Woman” was a frantic, manic, frenzied, white hot exclamation point to a kicker set.
The second set went on from there. “Rocking Horse” featured a bit in Derek’s solo section where the two guitar players converged, raining down the happy juice together. “Midnight Rider” was especially big and ringing, “Blue Sky” was all pay-off. But for this humble listener, perhaps the best moments of the show came next. “You Don’t Love Me” gave way to an extended shuffle section that the band just milked and milked, join on and on, until finally Derek took us over into a serene “Soul Serenade.” Then— as if there was any doubt— a “Whipping Post” encore. Ten minutes in the guitar players made their way over to “Will the Circle Be Unbroken”— third night in a row they’ve done it— but tonight, Gregg leaned in and sang it, a lovely moment, before they tumbled back to finish the “Post.” All in all, a glorious evening. 1.
