One of our missions at Hittin’ the Note is to turn our readers on to great music that you wouldn’t find out about otherwise. This CD is a perfect example. Guitarist Yosi Piamenta is a living legend in his native Israel, where he played with the Israeli Philharmonic. He commands top dollar for weddings and other gigs within the Jewish community, yet he is still unknown by most people outside that community. This is truly a shame, because his tone and phrasing are among the best of any guitar player around today.
Some of our readers may remember the excellent Heavenly Jams Band CD from a few years ago that featured Oteil Burbridge on bass. While that CD featured a mix of rock classics and Jewish traditional music, this CD leans more heavily towards the latter. While the Hebrew lyrics may be challenging to some listeners, this disc is an even better representation of Yosi’s music.
Of course, it never hurts to have a great band behind you. Yonrico Scott, Todd Smallie and Kofi Burbridge of the Derek Trucks Band form the core unit. In a way, it is a revelation to hear the Derek Trucks Band without Derek, because it shows what a great band they are, regardless of what artist and repertoire they are working with. Outstanding Atlanta artists Andrew Black and Barry Richman are also featured on a smoldering version of "As The Years Go Passing By."
The unifying theme throughout this disc is the spirituality that shines through Yosi’s playing. This is a man who is playing to glorify God, not himself, and that creates a vibe that you just can’t fake. This CD will challenge you to step out of your comfort zone, with its exotic scales and only one song sung in English. However, if you’re willing to make that journey, the jams on the other side are heavenly indeed.
