On her fifth studio album, this high-energy blues singer and blistering guitarist brings it all back home, underscoring her longtime commitment to roots music while exploring exciting new ground. In a major departure from her previous recordings, Susan sharpened her songwriting skills by co-writing nearly every track on Back to the River. She traveled across the country to collaborate with various songwriters in person, rather than working remotely. “I’ve been really enjoying songwriting,” she enthused. “I have been able to meet lots of people I’ve never met, and it’s really been a lot of fun. It was extremely humbling to meet so many amazing artists who turned out to be such open, sweet people.”
The result is a decidedly personal album that reveals a mother’s struggles with being far from home, a woman’s undying love for her man and an American’s reflection on the people’s power to right the course of a nation that has swerved off the rails. For her latest recording, Susan joined forces and shared songwriting credits with special guests like her husband, slide guitar guru Derek Trucks, as well as longtime collaborator and left-handed guitar master Doyle Bramhall II, roots-rock king Tony Joe White and alt-country legend Gary Louris.
A much-anticipated follow-up to Hope and Desire, Back to the River reveals Susan at her most passionate, alternating between unrestrained, fiery bravado and raw, vulnerable lament. Recorded at the legendary Sunset Sound Studios in Hollywood, CA, this album bristles with old-fashioned blues, New Orleans funk and country church gospel.
