Most Gov’t Mule fans are familiar with the band’s traditional end-of-the-year runs in New York City, but the practice actually started down in the Peach State. In 1998 and 1999, the Mule played two monumental New Year’s Eve shows at the Roxy Theatre in Atlanta; ’98’s show was put out as Live: With a Little Help from Our Friends, and now the band is marking the tenth anniversary of the ’99 performance with Mulennium, an epic, three-disc release.
Mulennium captures every note of Gov’t Mule’s musical greeting to the 21st Century; it is a tremendous blend of original tunes and cover songs, with a number of special guests as well, but at the core of the show is the Mule trio of Warren Haynes, Matt Abts and the late Allen Woody. These three played with a relentless power and force, and Mulennium serves as a wonderful reminder of the energy possessed by the initial Mule line-up.
Concerning the release of Mulennium, Warren stated, “I find myself trying to conjure up what to say about a show; in this case a memorable -- dare I even say magical -- show. New Year’s shows, as everyone in Muleland knows, are very special to us. The show was never intended to be an official release but we knew it should be recorded and, thanks to our friend Doug Oade, it was. Finally after all this time we have re-mixed it and are happy to share it with you.”
A show for the 21st century, a show for the ages -- on Mulennium, you can savor the timeless musical entity that is Gov’t Mule.
