Long before it became a destination for lovers of all things Allman, the Big House was a home. Specifically, it was the home of the Allman Brothers Band from 1970-1973, and much of their greatest music was written there. It was also the hub of the original band's sense of community, the near-mystical sense of Brotherhood that became one of the cornerstones of the group's identity over the years.

Now there is a new documentary called Please Call Home: The Big House Years, which beautifully captures the magic of those early days. Produced by the Big House Foundation, this film lovingly describes those special times in the history of the Allman Brothers Band in Macon, Georgia. Shot in stunning Hi-Def, this journey back in time captures all the joy and sorrow, triumphs and tragedies that the Allman Brothers Band experienced under the roof of the Big House.

We are now taking pre-orders for Please Call Home: the Big House Years with an expected ship date of mid March, just in time for the 40th anniversary of the band's first show on March 26th, 1969. Click here to order, and make sure to check out the next issue of Hittin' the Note for more about this remarkable film.

We are beyond thrilled to announce that Jaimoe's Jasssz Band, featuring Jaimoe, Junior Mack and Jay Collins will be playing at our annual Hittin' the Note Beacon party on March 21st with Tommy Talton, of Cowboy and CRS fame, opening as a solo act! This year's party will take place at the stylish Columbus 72, mere blocks from the Beacon, from 2 PM to 6 PM.

Kirk West, the Tour Mystic, is going to come by and talk about Please Call Home: The Big House Years. Butch Trucks will be stopping by to talk about Moogis. Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi and Oteil Burbridge have always been kind to visit in the past and they have certainly all been invited this year, along with the rest of the band. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, children of all ages, Wanee is ON! Rumors of its demise have been greatly exaggerated, and this year's Wanee Festival promises to be the best one ever! Tickets on sale Saturday March 7th at 10 AM!

After missing last year's festival due to Gregg's health issues, the Allman Brothers Band will be back, headlining both Friday and Saturday. Besides that, the extended family of the ABB will be there in force, including Gov't Mule, Jaimoe's Jasssz Band, a special Midnight set by The Derek Trucks Band, and Susan Tedeschi. ABB bassist Oteil Burbridge is playing a trio set with Bill Kreutzmann of the Grateful Dead and Scott Murawski, as well as sitting in with gospel sensations the Lee Boys. Wanee veterans Devon Allman's Honeytribe and Vaylor Trucks' band Bonobos Convergence will also be returning to Wanee.

For this year's festival, there are also lots of other talented performers from outside the immediate circle of the ABB. Don't miss the reunion of supergroup Arc Angels featuring Martin Sexton and Doyle Bramhall, jam icon Col. Bruce Hampton, or the Thursday kickoff party with the Radiators. Reggae legends Toots and the Maytals and the Wailers will add some island flavor, Jorma Kaukonen and Keller Williams will blow you away with one man and a guitar, blues-rock songstress Grace Potter will rock the house, and Hill Country Revue and Drive-By Truckers will add some Southern grease to the stew. '70s rock legends Little Feat and the Doobie Brothers will both be there, Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk will bring the funk like only New Orleans can, and Umphrey's McGee will demonstrate their intricate prog-rock wizardry.

As amazing as the lineup of musical talent is, a big part of the Wanee experience is the natural beauty and unique mojo of the Spirit of Suwannee Music Park. Bands always seem to play that much better at Wanee, spurred on by the spectacular surroundings and the incredible list of legends who have taken the stage at the park. Be sure to stop by the HTN booth and say hi, and we'll see you way down upon the Suwannee River.

1969: the year of Tranquility Base and Chappaquiddick, Woodstock and Altamont, Charles Manson and Richard Nixon. In the midst of these seminal events, a new band was formed without fanfare on March 26th in Jacksonville. From that free-form jam session emerged the Allman Brothers Band, and American rock music never would be the same. Hittin' the Note Issue #60 is proud to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the ABB with in-depth, comprehensive interviews and photos not available in other publications.

And if all that that juicy ABB-related content isn't enough, this issue also features fascinating stories about the making of Already Free by the Derek Trucks Band, prog-rock trailblazers Umphrey's McGee and guitarist extraordinaire Michael Falzarano, known for his work with Hot Tuna and the New Riders of the Purple Sage. Hittin' the Note Issue #60 is sure to be one of our best yet - if you are not yet a subscriber, please click here so that you don't miss out!

Sonny Moorman has been one of our favorite bluesmen since the very first time we heard him play, and we haven't changed our mind yet! We first featured Sonny in HTN back when the stone tablets were delivered to your house by dinosaur, and like a fine wine, he has only improved with age. If you like scorching blues guitar, passionate vocals and strong songwriting, Sonny's new CD Live As Hell is a surefire winner that will stay in your CD player for weeks at a time.
