Since the grand reopening of the Georgia Theatre on 8/1/11 there has been an onslaught of talented acts to perform at the coveted venue. Such acts include the likes of Chuck Leavell, Stockholm Syndrome, Aquarium Rescue Unit, The Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Yonder Mountain Sting Band, Railroad Earth and even Widespread Panic, just to name a few. For those fortunate enough to live in the classic city, performances at "The Theatre" are a regular occurrence. Be it a Friday or a Tuesday night, there is always something happening under the famed marquee on North Lumpkin.
While having the Georgia Theatre back on the map is truly a blessing for music lovers, it has left one unanswered question, "What grand opening show has been the best?" While answers to this will inevitably vary based upon a litany of factors, one thing that is safe to say is that the Railroad Earth show on Thursday 10/20/11 is to be included in the upper echelon of the aforementioned performances.
For those not familiar with Railroad Earth, they are a mostly acoustic band whose sound encompasses areas of folk, rock n' roll, bluegrass, jazz, and at times even country. To quote the band's website, "They sing of our nation's changing landscape and social ills with a commitment reminiscent of Woody Guthrie, while interpolating instrumental timbres that could have been pulled from Celtic or Cajun culture. And as anyone who has caught them live will attest, their concerts are imbued with the fire-in-the-belly passion of straight-ahead, blue collar rock & roll."
I will attest that this band always puts on a solid performance but their return to the Georgia Theatre was an impassioned one. Highlights included "Bird in a House", "Saddle of the Sun", "Storms", "Colorado", a beautiful segue from "The Man Who Invented Sin" into "Mighty River" and Chuck Berry's "Tore Up Over You." If you have yet to see this band, get out and make it happen, they have plenty of stops around the country prior to year end.
