He was a member of the ABB from 1979-82, put in two different tours of duty with Great Southern, and played with a who’s who of rock royalty over the years. Toler recently joined forces with Johnny Townsend, the blues belter who had a hit in the 70s with the Sanford/Townsend Band’s “Smoke From A Distant Fire.” The result? The Toler/Townsend Band! This assembly of veteran players has a sound that drips with the kind of gritty soulfulness you just can’t fake, and their self-titled debut album shows it on tunes like “Full Time Fool” and “Ugly Rumors.” Check out this excerpt from a review by Hittin’ the Note columnist Tom Clarke…. “All this time later, the expressive power in Townsend’s voice actually has become enhanced—just listen to him manipulate the brass-spiked and funky ‘Loneliness.’….Dan lets loose his dangerous side during ‘Ali Shuffle,’ peeling off plenty of tasty licks in an instrumental with definite shades of the mid-period Brothers.”
