Asheville, North Carolina has a special place in Warren Haynes'
big heart. Not only is it Warren's hometown, for the past 19 years
it has been the site of the annual Christmas Jam to benefit Habitat
for Humanity. This year Warren and Gov't Mule return to Asheville
for a rare mid-year treat, as the Mule headline the second annual
Asheville Music
Jamboree! This will take place on Memorial Day Weekend, May
23rd-25th, at the beautiful Deerfields Retreat
20 miles south of Asheville. Deerfields features nearly 1000 acres
of gorgeous, undisturbed nature. Apple orchards, mature shade
trees, lush grass, hiking trails, wooded camping areas, streams,
ponds, and gorgeous mountain views make this an extraordinary
music venue. With only 2500 tickets being made available, crowding
is a non-issue.
Besides the Mule closing down the show on Sunday, don't
miss reggae legend Burning Spear, the greasy New Orleans grooves
of Ivan Neville's Dumpstaphunk, and legendary songwriter
James McMurtry, plus many more great artists. One highlight should
be the versatile one-man-band Keller Williams jamming with bluegrass
legends Larry and Jenny Keel, a rare combo called Keller and the
Keels.
AMJam encourages parents to bring their children and enjoy the
festivities. There's a secured family camping area with
enforced quiet times, a robust Kids' Universe full of daily
activities, and a Sunday costume parade that'll bring all
youngsters right up on the main stage. Children 12 years old and
under get in free with a paying adult, and those ages 13 to 15
can purchase half-price tickets. Much like Warren's Christmas
Jam, a portion of proceeds will go to charity, meaning that it's
not only a good time, it's all for a good cause. Click
here for more details, or to buy tickets!

When the Disco
Biscuits first started playing college parties around Philadelphia
in the mid-'90s, they were a fairly unknown band trying to fuse
the seemingly divergent worlds of electronic dance music and live
jamming.
Fast forward ten years, and the Biscuits have become one of the
biggest live draws on the concert circuit. Their Camp Bisco festival
has become a huge yearly event, they are regulars at festivals
like Bonnaroo, and they have become one of the premier purveyors
of late-night club shows.
How did they do it? They did it by combining danceable, party
ready beats with ambitious compositions, fearless improvisation
and dedication to their craft. What other jamtronica band would
attempt an arrangement of classical tunes like Beethoven's Moonlight
Sonata, or Rossini's The Thieving Magpie? Who else
in the jamband world extends improvisation to the very structure
of songs, sometimes playing them backwards or "inverted?" The
band has even been known to start a song at one show and finish
it at the next show. The Disco Biscuits are known for breaking
all the rules of music, but at the same time, an intense musicality
is always present when they play.
Drummer Sam Altman decided to leave the band three years ago
to go to medical school, which presented a huge challenge
to a band built on a solid foundation of steady beats. Allen Aucoin,
known to many HTN readers for his playing in the Skydogs, came
to the rescue, and many Bisco fans now think the band is playing
better than ever.
Those of you in the Southeast have a chance to see this cutting-edge
band in person, as the group does an extended tour through the
South in April. Click on the image to the right for more information,
including how to buy tickets, or click here.

Many of you have already heard the news: due to health issues,
Gregg Allman will not be able to play at the Wanee Festival this
year, and as a result the Allman Brothers Band will not be performing.
However, we are happy to report that the festival is still on!
There will be extra sets played to help fill out the weekend's
entertainment, and a great weekend of fun and music is guaranteed
for all. Gov't Mule will be closing the Peach Stage Friday
night with a full 2.5-hour concert set and JUST ANNOUNCED: the Saturday
night Peach Stage will be closed by the WANEE FAMILY JAM prior
to the festivals traditional closing Derek Trucks & Susan
Tedeschi: Soul Stew Revival MIDNIGHT JAM on the Mushroom Stage.
Don't miss Bob Weir and Ratdog, Levon Helm Band, moe., Oteil
and the Peacemakers, JJ Grey and Mofro and all the other scheduled
bands that will also be appearing! For further information please
go to www.waneefestival.com.
Festival tickets will be $150.00 for two days inclusive of camping
and on Monday, March 31. One day tickets will be available for
$85.00 plus applicable surcharge. Tickets are available through
Ticketmaster. |
If
you want to get the party started right, you might want to stop
by the 5 Spot in the Little 5 Points neighborhood of Atlanta on
Wednesday April 9th. Our friends at INIO Music (see www.iniomusic.com
for details) are putting on a special showcase to whet your appetite
for Wanee. Guitarist extraordinaire and local Atlanta legend Barry
Richman will be there, and saxophone master Tomas Ramirez will
add his own brand of demented jazz-funk. Some of the finest musicians
in Atlanta will be there, including keyboard master Tom Grose,
bassist Neil Fountain and drummer Marcus Williams. Lots of jamming
and special guests are expected, so you don't want to miss this
one! For tickets, directions and more info please click here.
We're also proud to announce that Atlanta blues legend and
longtime HTN favorite Donna Hopkins will be opening for Robert
Cray at Atlanta's Center Stage on Thursday April 10th. If
you haven't left for Wanee yet by then, it should be a great
show, and a wonderful opportunity for Donna to reach a new audience
of blues fans. Click here
