Hittin' the Note Issue #53 has been printed and is now being mailed out, and it is chock full of some great writing on some cool artists. We start off with a feature on Kings of Leon, whose new record, Because of the Times, has firmly established them as a force to be reckoned with. Jorma Kaukonen is a living legend in every sense of the term, but the Hall of Fame guitarist refuses to rest on his laurels. He has just released a spectacular new solo album, Stars in My Crown, on which he explores some new and different musical directions. From across the pond comes the Irish blues-rock band the Answer, and there will be no question - these guys from Belfast are the real deal.

Railroad Earth combines the best of rock and bluegrass and has developed a very loyal following over the last few years. Their sound is captured perfectly on their new live CD, Elko, which is turning heads everywhere. Singer/songwriter JJ Grey writes songs that possess character, and as the leader of his band MOFRO, JJ has delivered an unpretentious, back-to-the-basics record, Country Ghetto, which is in keeping with his rural north Florida upbringing. Guitarist Barry Richman has made his mark on the Atlanta music scene for over 35 years, and his latest CD, Blues from Mars Vol.2, shows the love an artist has for his craft, guitars, and great music.

Issue #53 also contains our regular columns, "Compact Dreams" and "In Tune," while our "Photo Session" segment features a look at the works of Adam Smith, who has dedicated his career to capturing the world of the blues. We have our "HTN 6-Pack" section and recaps of some sweet CDs for your consideration. Also, Hittin' the Note is proud and honored to announce that the one and only Bill Walton, NBA Hall of Famer and noted Dead Head, has joined our staff with his semi-regular column, "A View from Above," which is part history lesson, part stream of consciousness, deeply personal and all good. Guitarist Scott Sawyer has been active on the North Carolina jazz scene for the last 20 years, but his musical roots are rock and blues. With a little help from some very talented friends, Scott has released Go There, a wonderful collection of 11 instrumentals that capture the full range of his abilities, which include a blend of Jack Pearson's nimble touch and Ronnie Earl's warm tone. With the Burbridge brothers backing him - Oteil on bass, Kofi on B-3 organ and flute - Go There flows nicely from one track to the next. The album opens with George Harrison's "Taxman," which starts with some tasteful organ swells and Oteil's brooding bass line, before giving way to Scott's ascending solo and nice wah-wah effects. "Slow Dance" is a somber blues tune, "Slow Down, Freight Train" evokes a smoky jazz club after midnight and "In the Stream" flows out of the speakers. "Going...Going...Gone" is filled with Sawyer's edgy fretwork, a nice organ run by Kofi, and drummer Kenny Soule's backbeat holding it all together. The band follows Oteil's thumping bass through the Middle-Eastern flavored "Dark Lady," releasing some relentless energy at just the right moment - leave it to the Burbridge brothers to shake things up and yet focus intensely on the rhythm and melody! Then, On "I Wish You Would," Scott tips his hat to John McLaughlin before the powerful blues-rocker "Go Home" closes things out with a flourish. As usual, Hittin' the Note will be on the road this summer with the Allman Brothers Band and at various festivals including Wakarusa, 10,000 Lakes and MagnoliaFest, which will be held in October. We will be signing up subscribers, giving away free tickets, and enjoying the festivities with the best live bands in the land! This year's ABB tour promises to be a good one, with several of our favorite groups opening, including Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Bob Weir and Ratdog, JJ Grey and MOFRO, the North Mississippi Allstars, and Drive-By Truckers. Look for us out on the highway! Click here to check out the ABB's posted tour dates.

This year's tour will conclude with a historical, epic event, as the Allman Brothers Band plays a benefit show at Atlanta's Piedmont Park with Dave Matthews Band. This will be the first concert the ABB has played in Piedmont Park since September 27, 1970, and it will be a legendary performance to tell your grandchildren about! The Allman Brothers used to play free shows in the park back in 1969-'70, and this is one tradition that we at HTN are happy to see restored. Just as the ABB used to play back in the day with groups like the Grateful Dead and the Hampton Grease Band, this time around they will join forces with the wildly popular Dave Matthews Band, who last played with the Allman Brothers on the 1994 HORDE tour. Cross-pollination and sit-ins between the two bands are to be expected, as is a huge crowd that could top 50,000. Look for more details about HTN-related activities revolving around this unique happening, and we hope to see you there! You can also read about those early days of the ABB at Piedmont Park by picking up on Issues #1, #2, and #3 at https://hittinthenote.com!

Thank you for your support of Hittin' the Note, and all the wonderful music we bring to you. Keep your eyes and ears open for more new, happening items, and support live music whenever you can.
