We are happy to announce that we have the entire Allman Brothers Band August tour currently in stock! After an 11-month hiatus, the band came back firing on all cylinders and Hittin' the Note as only they can. Where some bands might be hesitant after such a long layoff, the ABB didn't have any training wheels on this tour, breaking out new songs and rearranging old ones to keep the music fresh and alive.

Willie Dixon's blues classic "I Ain't Superstitious" was given the full ABB treatment, with Warren's gruff vocals and Derek's stinging slide taking the song to new heights. Bob Dylan's "It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry" was reinvented as a hard-hitting rocker, with Gregg Allman belting out the lyrics with soulful, bluesy power. A number of shows featured special guest appearances from tour mates Bob Weir & Ratdog as well as other friends such as Roy Haynes, Jr. Mack, Bruce Katz from Gregg Allman and Friends, Danny Louis, Susan Tedeschi, Jay Collins, Scott Sharrard and Luther Dickinson.

Of course, there are also new and interesting interpretations of the timeless ABB catalog, proving once again that songs like "Whipping Post" and "Jessica" are inexhaustible vehicles for improvisation. A new jam was added to "Rocking Horse," with amazing results, and the extended version of "Revival" they played on 8/15 is unlike any you've heard before - it was a good tour for long jams! The "Afro Blue" excursion with Roy Haynes at Jones Beach was absolutely mesmerizing, the extended "Done Somebody Wrong" in Chicago exemplifies the magical improvisation of the ABB, the 8/30 Red Rocks show features the longest "Dreams" of the decade, clocking in at 15:37, and the 8/20 Hartford show featured a 40-minute "Mountain Jam" that stands up proudly to any other version.

As you can tell, we think this was one of the finest tours in years. Click here to find out more, or to order these fantastic shows!

Jimmy Herring has earned a reputation as a musician's musician, starting with his days in the groundbreaking Aquarium Rescue Unit, and continuing through tours of duty in the Allman Brothers Band and the Dead. Recently he joined Widespread Panic full time, instantly giving the band a jolt of energy and taking their fanbase by storm.

That impressive resume, however, is just a prelude to Lifeboat, his incredible debut solo album. Here, Jimmy proves that he is a songwriter and a musical visionary, not just a great guitarist. Lifeboat transcends all limited categories of jazz, rock or fusion, and in the end, it's just really good music.

"I think it's flat-out, by far, the best thing he's ever done," Allman Brothers Band bassist Oteil Burbridge said in a recent interview. "He called me and said 'I've just made a breakthrough,' so I knew it was coming."

Among other things, Oteil sees Lifeboat helping to break Jimmy out of the jamband niche and getting him across to the jazz crowd. Jimmy has apparently already got the seal of approval from one of the giants of jazz guitar.

"I'm proud of him, and for him. I mean, John McLaughlin called him!" Oteil says enthusiastically. "I'm really excited for Jimmy, and I think he's going to make a big splash outside of the jamband scene."

Hittin' the Note readers will also want to know that this CD features Derek Trucks prominently throughout the disc. Jimmy and Derek have always shared a special musical chemistry, and whenever they play together, magic is guaranteed to happen!

For years now, Hittin' the Note has been telling you about Papa Mali, New Orleans' own voodoo-slide guru. After a story in the March issue of HTN, and his incendiary performance at Wanee Fest in April, many of you asked about ordering his latest CD, Do Your Thing, but, sadly, it was out of print for a while.

Well, we are happy to announce that we now have Do Your Thing in stock! This CD ranges from swampy blues to high-energy Mardi Gras Indian tunes to tender acoustic numbers. Throughout the disc, the common thread is Malcolm Wellbourne, aka Papa Mali, who sings and plays with an uncommon soulfulness and pure Louisiana mojo that just can't be faked. He is a great songwriter too - check out the memorable story of "Little Moses" or the dry wit of "I'm Getting Over It."

The title track is a cover of the late, great Isaac Hayes classic, and Papa Mali does justice to it with a deeply soulful delivery and mellow vibe. "Girls In Bossier City" features Papa's electrifying slide work and builds to an apocalyptic crescendo. Can you afford to not hear this CD? We don't think so.

9/19/71 is a very special day in history. 37 years ago, the original lineup of the Allman Brothers Band played a legendary show at SUNY Stonybrook that has become a big part of the band's epic live-performance reputation. 20-minute version of "Dreams" that some call the greatest of all time? Check. Only soundboard recording of Duane playing on "Blue Sky?" Check. Versions of "You Don't Love Me" and "In Memory of Elizabeth Reed" that rank among the best ever? Check.

Many of you already have it, but how about that friend or neighbor who is always complimenting your Allman collection? Maybe some young person needs to be educated in what constitutes great music? Tired of lending them your copy? Give them the gift that keeps giving - their very own Stonybrook 9/19/71 two-CD set with interesting and informative liner notes by HTN's own John Lynskey!

Captain Soularcat has been one of the finest local bands in Georgia for years now, and their new CD The Rise (recorded at WonderDog Sound) is their best yet! We invite you down to Smith's Olde Bar on September 26th to check out this blues-rock dynamo, which is built on a sturdy foundation of Scott Warren's bass and vocals and Benji Shanks' wicked slide guitar licks.

"As musicians, we can always sit down and jam till the sun comes up, but to capture that same magic and put it into a four, five, or six-minute song on a disc can be tough to do," says Shanks, explaining the latest Soularcat recording. The band rose to that challenge, pardon the pun, and put out an excellent CD. Check out Hittin' the Note #58 for a full review of The Rise.
