After this show ended the announcer proclaimed “Still undefeated, the heavyweight champions of the world, the Allman Brothers Band!” In front of a vast crowd that was allegedly the largest in the history of the Gentilly Stage, the ABB showed why they are one of the living treasures of American music with a passionate performance that covered all aspects of their career, from their first album in 1969 to 2003’s Hittin’ the Note.
One very special part of this show was an appearance by former Allman Brother Chuck Leavell on “Jessica.” His long, jazzy solo set the tone for a massive, blockbuster version that brought the house down. Check out the “Mountain Jam” and “In a Silent Way” teases, and the strong solos by Derek and Warren. Chuck also joined the band for “The Weight,” which featured Susan Tedeschi at her soul-testifying best.
Other highlights from this show include a great “Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More” with killer solos by both Derek and Warren, and an expansive, jazzy “Rockin’ Horse” that stands with the best versions of that song. “Every Hungry Woman” was nothing less than explosive, but perhaps the peak of the whole experience was the powerful rendition of “Desdemona” that drew a roar from the crowd when the band “hit the note” in the middle of Warren’s solo. A truly special moment, captured for the ages on this crisp 2-cd set. Get one for yourself and turn it up!
